When this wedding arrived in our submissions inbox, we knew instantly that it was a story we had to share. We were completely captivated by Sharon and John's enduring love, a romance that spanned more than four decades before finally leading them back to one another. It is the kind of story that captured the hearts of our entire team.

Their journey is a beautiful reminder that love is not always linear. Sometimes there are unexpected twists and turns, seasons of loss and growth, before destiny quietly takes the lead. It is a story of faith, hope, second chances, and the belief that some love stories are simply meant to unfold in their own perfect time. We are honored to share John's words as he reflects on the extraordinary journey that brought them back to forever.

John and Sharon's Story

A story that began in 1978, paused for more than four decades, and found its way back to love, in the most unexpected and beautiful way.

Sharon and I met in the summer of 1978 at the Mountainside, NJ Rescue Squad. I was a junior at Rutgers College of Engineering, and she was a high school senior and a squad member. She noticed me first and asked her friend to introduce us. Though I was dating someone at the time, Sharon and I eventually began dating briefly in early 1979, and I became her first love.

My mother adored her. I still remember her saying, in her Hungarian accent, "John, that Sharon... she's the one for you." But life had other plans. That summer, I left for Oregon to sell reference books, and knowing Sharon was heading to college in California, I ended our relationship to avoid the challenges of long-distance. By fall, we were both dating the people we would eventually marry.

In December 1979, my mother insisted I bring Sharon a yellow rose while she was home for the holidays. I resisted but ultimately did as she asked. Sharon was gracious and kind when she opened the door, and that brief visit became the last time we saw or spoke to each other for 42 years.

Life unfolded. I married and built a 35-year marriage in North Carolina, where we raised three children. Sharon married, raised two daughters, and later moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, to be near her children and grandchildren after her husband passed away in 2015. By 2017, my own marriage had ended. We both tried dating again in our 50s and early 60s, each of us quietly wondering if companionship was something we'd simply aged out of. I never imagined that the girl I once left behind would one day return to me.

Then everything changed on July 31, 2021, Sharon's 60th birthday. Her two older sisters whisked her away on a kayaking trip near Sedona. One evening, while working on a puzzle, the conversation turned to first loves. Her sister Cindy asked, "Whatever happened to that guy in New Jersey who broke your heart?" A quick Facebook search revealed that I was single. With encouragement from her sisters, Sharon sent me a message.

I replied within hours.

We began video calls that lasted for months, conversations filled with familiarity, warmth, and a sense that something long dormant had awakened. On November 1, 2021, I flew to Scottsdale to see her. That first meeting was extraordinary. We both felt God's hand guiding us. I told her I loved her, and she said she loved me too.

On my second visit, about two weeks later, during dinner at Postino, I told her I wanted to marry her. She smiled and said, "I know."I returned again in December, and once more on January 1. On January 13, I proposed. She said yes!

We were married on May 1, at Stonebridge Manor in Mesa, Arizona, in a joyful, elegant celebration surrounded by family, friends, and the unmistakable sense that our story had come full circle. We honeymooned at Atlantis in the Bahamas, grateful, stunned, and still slightly amused that a love story we thought had ended before we were 21 had simply been waiting for its time. Speaking of time, I received a beautiful gift from my bride, a watch engraved with the inscription, "God's perfect timing." Sometimes love arrives early. Sometimes it arrives late. And sometimes, if you're very fortunate, it arrives twice.

Our journey is one of timing, loss, rediscovery, God's faithfulness, and the enduring power of first love. We love sharing our story and do so often, always receiving a heartfelt response. We are honored to share our story with your readers, especially those who believe, or need to believe, that love can return at any age, and sometimes in the most miraculous ways.

Oh, and one more thing. We featured yellow roses at our wedding in honor of my mother's uncanny foresight.
