Romantic Italian Castle Wedding at Castello di Petrata in Umbria
When we first saw the images of Hannah and Ian’s wedding at Castello di Petrata, we were certain we were looking at a styled shoot. Every detail had been so carefully considered, transforming the already breathtaking setting into a vision of flowers and chandeliers against the Umbrian landscape.
What we realized was even more special. This was a love letter from a mother to her daughter and the couple she adored.
Working closely with the team at Castello di Petrata, Hannah’s mother, Florence, handled the booking and planning from the very beginning, coordinating everything from afar and traveling to Italy to choose the menu and finalize the details in person. It was a mother bringing her daughter’s dream to life.
The flowers played a huge part in the transformation. A palette of greenery, white, blush, and soft rose ran from ceremony to reception, with hydrangea, lisianthus, delphinium, roses, and anthurium creating an elegant, editorial feel. Against the ancient stone and climbing foliage of the castle, the flowers and candlelight felt abundant without competing with the setting.
The beauty of Castello di Petrata is its ability to take on a completely different character throughout the day. Hannah and Ian began with breakfast overlooking Assisi, followed by preparations in the historic castle rooms. Their ceremony took place outdoors, framed by views of the Umbrian countryside and a lush floral arch, before guests moved into the gardens for aperitivo and then to an open-air dinner beneath seven suspended crystal chandeliers. Each setting revealed another side of the estate.
Family remained at the center of it all. Ian’s father, officiated the ceremony, marrying his son. After the father-daughter dance, Hannah took the microphone to say a few words to her mother and present her with her bouquet before the mother-son dance. In the last row of the ceremony, a reserved seat was held for loved ones in heaven, a poingnant detail that carried enormous meaning.
Then came the Italian touches: a vintage red car, a sparkler tunnel after the cake cutting, a tiramisu tower finished by Hannah and Ian themselves, millefoglie with cream and berries, and cacio e pepe served late into the night in the Limonaia.
The soundtrack moved from Debussy’s Clair de Lune to Iris and Viva la Vida, adding another layer of personality to a day where every choice had been thoughtfully made.
The wedding shows exactly what makes Castello di Petrata so special: a historic Umbrian setting that can feel intimate in the morning, elegant beneath chandeliers at dinner, and completely transformed by night.
A beautiful Italian wedding shaped by family, flowers, candlelight, and an extraordinary setting.
