HOW TO PLAN YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION
With engagement season right around the corner, we thought you brides to be would like to know what goes into an engagement session and why they're such an integral part of the wedding photography. So we asked our Fine Art Curation member Lance Nicoll to let us know what makes an engagement session good?
From Lance: "This beautiful engagement session has a unique story to it. Jasper is in the military and he and Amelia flew down to New Orleans to get married, just the two of them and this session followed a couple of hours later. The unkept landscape is actually a tucked away corner of the immense New Orleans City Park."
Should a couple wear something specific for an engagement session?
I think so yes. For an engagement session, I think it can be key to think through wardrobe carefully. Initially I would only make subtle suggestions and go in depth when a couple would ask about attire for their session. But now I make it a point to send images of attire inspiration for my couples. I usually suggest going with two looks. For my guys, I recommend one look being semi-formal with a nice fitted suite and solid, preferably white dress shirt and then the other look being just one small step down in how formal it is. For instance, jeans and a sports coat and dress shirt. For our brides, we recommend soft colors but mostly importantly staying away from busy patterns. Solid neutrals are a super safe way to go but red and blues can shoot really well too. At the end of things, I always make sure to tell our clients that the most important thing is the feel like themselves and are comfortable and that our inspiration images are purely just that inspiration and a good reference starting point.
What kind of location is ideal for an engagement session?
Locations should definitely fit the expectations of the clients and when I have preliminary chats with our couple’s I always ask what they envision their photos looking like. If they don’t have a preference then we start with what we really love, a beautiful open outdoor location. Stunning views and open fields are amazing can’t go wrong locations for Engagements. One thing that is very important for a natural outdoor location or iconic urban setting is that there isn’t too much competition in each frame. Too much color contrast in the frame can distract from your beautiful clients. This can mean cleaning out any clutter in an indoor location or choosing crops outdoors then ensure all eyes go to your lovely couple.
What does a couple get from having an engagement session prior to their wedding?
Engagement sessions are amazing in so many ways. The absolute best part is getting to work together and build an amazing relationship and comfort level between photographer and client. Having a stress-free afternoon to spend with your clients creating beautiful imagery is the perfect way to start off that wedding journey together. Something you can do on engagement session that you can’t afford as much on the wedding day is flexibility. It’s raining this afternoon during golden hour, so how about a sunrise session instead? Engagement sessions allow you to create amazing imagery, in perfect locations, while getting to work with and build a wonderful relationship with your couple’s – they are one of the best parts of being a wedding photographer.
