The Ultimate Cotswolds Honeymoon Guide

May 17, 2018 | Honeymoon

We love to hear about your honeymoon bucket lists and we know first hand how overwhelming organising your honeymoon can be, so recently we headed to the ultra English Cotswolds with it's quintessential stone buildings and beyond cute houses (we were looking up property prices on the way home!).

Our drive down the quaint roads towards Kings Head Hotel in Cirencester had us Googling 'how to keep Hyacinths alive when you have no green thumb' as we passed rolling hills and acres of farms. Spring was upon us, so we'd packed our best overnight bag with layers, hats and smart casual tweed-wear - ready for every weather type and to fit right in...

In the small town of Cirencester, the Kings Head Hotel was our base for our time in the Cotswolds and was the perfect balance of convenience and tourist spots. Full of independent local boutiques and a 1,000 year old church opposite, it's the perfect location for epic bridal portraits in the grounds of this previous monastery. Despite some parts of the hotel being from the 14th century (there's a Roman road underneath reception!), the interior however has thankfully been updated to luxury standards and it has all the comforts of a home away from home.

We checked into our Country Life-style suite and we explored the town around us whilst making plans to head further into the countryside the next day. The hotel has a fantastic range of ceremony and reception rooms (wish it was this easy to choose a venue when we were looking to get married!) in which you can be married. Even if you're already wed, grab a bottle of champagne from the bar and two glasses and head to the roof terrace where you can meander over the English rooftops.

Dinner fast approached and I must admit not only did we indulge like it was the end of the world, the quality of the food was second to none. Seabream with Samphire and Beef Fillet with Purple Broccoli was on the menu and every last morsel was devoured. Despite being twice as heavy as when we started, the vanilla panacotta also went down a treat. Do NOT miss dinner here at the hotel if you stay.

Our lazy morning the next day was enhanced by the epic breakfast of all breakfasts. Cereals, muesli's, fresh eggs any way you like them, bread baked that morning in the kitchen and an endless array of teas, juices, preserves, cereals, and manly breakfasts that were fried, baked and sauteed. On these well fed, lazy mornings, we wonder why we don't live in the countryside and do this every day. But then we're reminded that we have a one year old at home and that diet would fast create an unforgiving waistline...

We carried onwards with full bellies to the deepest parts of the Cotswolds to Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water and it did not disappoint. Every quaint English fantasy you've ever had (you have those too right?!) is met with precision - stone cottages, spring flowers in the garden and quiet roads. Just beware the coach loads of tourists that come in and out of these little towns in sporadic intervals!

If you're planning your European honeymoon, make the Kings Head a part of your English trip - and be sure to invite us too...
